The Girl on the Platform: Based on a true story, a totally heartbreaking, epic and gripping World War 2 page-turner Customer Reviews
:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Ivan Koretsky -- Shockingly shallow, implausible, frankly contemptuous of the trevails not only of the"good Germans" : It's so appalling to read this "interpretation" of the "Resistance" in Germany or anywhere in Europe I've no idea where to start. This was a fluff, pulp novel, and I won't berate the genre, only my wasted four hours in reading it. What worries me the most is that young people, many people, are deriving what they think is an education and understanding about the events depicted in the novel, and instead, if they're interested in what really happened they should be in nonfiction. This new embrace of the second world war as a backdrop for fluffy fiction really worries me; if we are supposed to feel sympathetic toward characters who believe that they've risked anything, who believe that they've achieved some moral high ground while working for the regime, then we're in worse trouble than I'd feared. But, to the point: if you want complete garbage, some romance and requisite family issues, and you can find a place in your heart for pages of narcissism, go for it and spend the buck on the download. If you respect history and truth and honor even in telling the truth through fictional narrative, give this a miss, and visit the Holocaust museum or Normandy, or Pearl, or any of the camps, and actually learn about just how terrible it was. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Luv2read -- Another really great Ellie Midwood read : I’ve read all this author’s books so it was with great relish I grabbed this one the minute I saw it on preorder. It’s such a treat to enjoy an author’s work especially when the author is prolific and there is more to come. Ellie Midwood’s storytelling is a treat for many reasons. The background research is impeccable. The characters authentically fly from the pages like people you know, or want to know. And most significantly the storylines flow so smoothly, like melted butter. “The Girl on the Platform” is no exception and the minute I picked this up and began to read this based-on-real-events story, it kept me up into the night. From the first pages when the protagonist Libertas, aka Libby, arrives at her new job working for MGM-Germany and shows subtle signs of Nazi resistance/indifference, I like this character. She is not deluded by per social position: being related to a wealthy man who finances the Nazis and her job connections at MGM. When she notices a frame with a missing photo of a famous celebrity on the wall at work her curiosity is piqued and we get a glimpse into who this woman is. That small detail is not insignificant in 1933 in Berlin and it sets up the building tension as the plot moves along and a friend of Libby’s goes missing. Right about here I’m turning the pages like a speeding Ferrari. I love how Midwood weaves real people into this tight plot. How she isn’t in your face about the horrors that are occurring that can’t be spoken out loud. It’s masterful writing when the picture is painted with subtle dignity that highlights what’s important without the histrionics. Another great story by one of my favorite historical fiction writers. Can’t wait for more! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Marina Osipova -- A story of great courage and sacrifice : Leading a double life is dangerous. Being brave to stand up to tyranny is a heroic deed. In Germany, few dared after Hitler came to power. Libertas and Harro, and their friends were among them who have found the courage. What an honorable mission to introduce us to forgotten or not widely known heroes who risked their lives in their unequal struggle against the Nazi regime! The author’s talent to place the reader at the very heart of the events is remarkable. The love story of Libertas and Harro is not a usual one, tempered by the same attitude to the importance of human life and freedom. Their bravery is astounding, if not a bit reckless under such dangerous circumstances. Take your time to absorb the story of real people and the book will live on in your memory long after the last page has been read. Now, with scenes still playing in my head, I’m telling you, “Read this remarkable book. As it is the case with all this authors’ tales, this one is scrupulously researched and beautifully written.” ( Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Beautiful story : I would like to think I would have this type of courage to do what these people did for right and to smile and laugh at their deaths. There were so many others who gave their all to stop that madman and his evil cohorts who I am sure are now burning in hell. If you have not read Ellie's books today is the day to start, they are all excellent and always well researched and as of this book brings a true personal story to life. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from pamarella -- Loved their Love ❤️ : This was a great book! Ellie Midwood has the magic touch to make everything she writes a great book. It’s especially wonderful because these were real people who sacrificed and fought the fight to wake up Germans about the evil of Hitler! They tirelessly worked to open eyes and tear down the evil regime. They denied their personal futures to try and make things right. The love that Harry and Libs had was quite special and Ellie portrayed it beautifully!! Their love kept me page turning. I also wanted to learn their fate as I suspected their resistance team couldn’t continue successfully much longer. A beautiful book. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Diana D. -- Hope through Sacrifice : Brave souls helped defeat Hitler and the characters in this well-written novel depict those active resistance fighters, but their fight was with dangerous subterfuge and the mighty pen rather than war weapons. The primary characters are believable as are their comrades. This novel definitely has meat on its bones and is one of the more intriguing and breath-holding than many I’ve read recently. I highly recommend! ( Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rev Genevieve M. Dox -- Thriller : This book well describes the passion of the resistance fighters who paid a high cost for their love of country and willingness to resist the powers that abused the innocent people of not only their country but many. It definitely holds one's interest because of the intrigue. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Midwood never dusappoints! : As usual, with Ellie Midwood's books, I could not put this down. It is extremely well written. I can tell there was a lot of research put into this book; and she really makes these characters, who were actual people, come alive. It brought me to tears, a few times. Midwood is an incredibly talented author. I highly recommend reading this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Katie Vincent -- Another masterpiece from this gifted author : Words seem insufficient for the way in which Ms Midwood has woven the story of Libertas and Harro, along with their friends. Particularly in the political climate of 2021, we should never forget that there were those who stood up to the Fascist regime. Never forget. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 16, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Emma the Bookworm -- Heartbreaking & Thought Provoking : It was only having started this book, I realised the characters were real (a detour to Wikipedia followed!). What brave, brave people the Shulze-Farbens and their fellow resistance fighters were in going up against the Nazi machine in the name of freedom. Not sure personally about the alliance with the Russians knowing how that turned out but can understand the wish for Hitler’s manic reign to end. This is a book that really got under my skin. Highly recommended. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 27, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mrs. R. E. Hingston -- How brave she was in her fight against the Nazis : Just a normal German couple who's fight against the Nazis along with friends stood up against Hitler & his murders with no thought for their own lives, they should never be forgotten either they gave their lives for others ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 3, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Mrs J. -- I was disappointed. : Book was OK, but found the writing of the devotion of Libertas and Harro quite annoying, especially when in real life they had an open marriage and Libertas had requested a divorce but was convinced to stay because of their resistance work. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from blossom -- Book : I really tried to get into this book but after five chapters I gave up it was not fir me ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 28, 2021 )
